From ancient midwinter feasts to the modern family festival.
Christmas is celebrated on the twenty-fifth of December by billions of people worldwide, blending devotion, tradition and family togetherness. The festival we know today grew over many centuries.
For Christians, Christmas marks the birth of Jesus Christ in Bethlehem. Although the Gospels do not name a date, the church settled on the twenty-fifth of December in the fourth century. The word Christmas comes from Christ's Mass, the service celebrating the nativity.
The timing overlapped with older winter-solstice celebrations such as the Roman Saturnalia, a period of feasting and generosity. As Christianity spread, many joyful midwinter customs, including lights, greenery and feasting, were woven into the celebration.
Much of the modern Christmas took shape in the nineteenth century. Decorating an evergreen tree, sending greeting cards and the figure of a gift-giving Santa Claus all became popular then. The first commercial Christmas card was sent in 1843, the ancestor of the personalised cards people share online today.
Now Christmas is a global celebration observed by people of many backgrounds. At its heart remain the themes that have always defined it: light in the darkness, generosity, and time with those we love. Sending a warm greeting, such as a personalised Merry Christmas card, keeps that spirit of connection alive.
